How to Know When There Is a Clog in the Sewer Line

A clogged sewer line is a problem homeowners surely hope to avoid, as it can lead to additional issues and consequences that can cause damage and lead to potential health risks. It is important to identify and repair the clog quickly by calling a professional for drain cleaning to limit the issues they can cause. Here are some common signs of a clogged sewer line to help homeowners identify them.

Unpleasant Odors and Gurgling Noises

bad smell Some signs of a clog in a home’s sewer line are unpleasant odors and unusual gurgling sounds. Once these are noticed, getting a plumber out quickly is important to ensure the home is safe and sanitary.

  • Unpleasant Odors: If homeowners notice a sewer-like smell, it could indicate a sewer line blockage. These foul smells can mean the waste and sewage have nowhere to go due to the clog or leaking from the line. Unfortunately, this smell can linger until the clog or issue is resolved.
  • Gurgling Noises: A gurgling sound in the drain means that waste and water cannot flow freely through the line as they should due to a buildup, and trapped air bubbles can cause the concerning noise.

Backed-up Drains in Toilets, Sinks, or Tubs

Backed-up drains can also be a sign of a sewer line clog or another issue, such as damaged or crushed lines. Backups can occur due to waste and water having nowhere else to go in the sewer line except back into the home through the drains and toilets.

If this occurs, it’s best to get a professional plumber out quickly to avoid damage and health risks for home inhabitants. Plumbers may use a drain snake for clog removal or a technique called hydro jetting to clear the clog and clean any other debris from the line to avoid future clogs. However, if the line is damaged, it will also need repair or replacement.

Slow Drains

bathtub Drains that take longer to empty can also indicate a sewer line clog. If only one drain in the home is affected, there may be a clog in that drain line, but If several drains in the home or all of them drain slowly, there may be a clog in the sewer line that needs professional attention.

These problems should be addressed by a professional plumber, as there are additional issues that can cause these signs. If the cause is a clog, drain cleaning, such as hydro jetting or the use of a drain snake, may be all that is needed to fix the problem. But underlying issues such as broken sewer lines and lines damaged by tree root intrusion will need additional solutions.
